Tesla Enters India

Tesla Enters India: Launches Model Y at ₹59.89 Lacs

The moment EV enthusiasts and the Indian automotive industry have eagerly awaited for years has finally arrived. Tesla, the undisputed global pioneer in electric vehicles, has officially opened the doors to its flagship showroom in Mumbai, marking its highly anticipated grand entry into the Indian market. With the sleek Model Y leading the charge and the Model 3 also expected to make an appearance, this isn’t just a car launch; it’s a statement, a new chapter in India’s journey towards sustainable mobility.

The buzz has been palpable, fueled by Tesla’s “coming soon” teaser on its new X (formerly Twitter) account. But this wasn’t a sudden surge; it’s the culmination of a long and winding road, fraught with policy discussions, import duty disagreements, and the complexities of a market that even Elon Musk once dubbed “tough.”

A Journey of Perseverance: From Speculation to Showroom

Tesla’s India saga has been a testament to perseverance. For nearly a decade, the prospect of Tesla in India remained a tantalising, yet exclusive, dream. The primary roadblock consistently revolved around India’s steep import duties on completely built units (CBUs). Elon Musk had openly voiced concerns about these tariffs, which significantly inflated the final price tags of imported Teslas. India, on its part, maintained its stance, pushing for local manufacturing to bolster its “Make in India” initiative.

The current launch, therefore, represents a significant breakthrough. While the Model Ys entering India are reportedly imported from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, the successful negotiations and strategic adjustments hint at a carefully calculated move by the EV giant to establish its brand presence and gauge market demand before potentially considering local production in the future. This phased approach allows Tesla to plant its flag and begin building its ecosystem in a market brimming with potential.

Model Y: The Flagbearer of Tesla’s Indian Ambition

The spotlight at the Mumbai showroom is firmly on the Tesla Model Y, offered in two compelling rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variants:

  • Model Y Rear Wheel Drive: Priced at ₹59,89,000 (ex-showroom), this variant offers a WLTP-certified range of 500 kilometers, a 0-100 km/h sprint in a brisk 5.9 seconds, and the ability to add up to 238 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes with a Supercharger.
  • Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive: For those seeking extended adventures, this variant comes in at ₹67,89,000 (ex-showroom), boasting an impressive 622 kilometres of WLTP range, a quicker 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.6 seconds, and a Supercharge boost of up to 267 kilometres in 15 minutes. Both variants share a top speed of 201 km/h.

Personalization and the Price Tag: The Choices You Make

While the Stealth Grey exterior is included in the ex-showroom price, Tesla offers a palette of vibrant colours for an additional cost:

  • Pearl White Multi-Coat: ₹95,000
  • Diamond Black: ₹95,000
  • Glacier Blue: ₹1,25,000
  • Quicksilver: ₹1,85,000
  • Ultra Red: ₹1,85,000

For the interior, an all-black theme is standard, but a sophisticated Black and White Interior can be opted for at an additional ₹95,000.

Full Self-Driving Capability: The Future, at a Price

Tesla’s much-touted Full Self-Driving (FSD) Capability is available as an optional extra for ₹6,00,000. While the company website suggests future updates will enable the car to “drive itself almost anywhere with minimal driver intervention,” it’s crucial to note Tesla’s disclaimer: “The currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous. Some features require turn signals and are limited in range.

The activation and use of these features depend on achieving reliability far over that of human drivers, as demonstrated by billions of miles of experience, as well as regulatory approval, which may take longer in some jurisdictions. As these self-driving features evolve, your car will be continuously upgraded through over-the-air software updates.” This emphasizes that FSD, while futuristic, is still growing and requires driver engagement.

To illustrate the top-tier configuration, a Model Y RWD with the Ultra Red exterior, Black and White interior, and the Full Self-Driving Capability would set you back ₹76,69,000 (ex-showroom), a premium of ₹8.8 Lacs over the Long Range RWD variant’s base price.

Booking, Financing, and Delivery Expectations

Booking your Tesla Model Y is a seamless online process, with an initial booking amount of ₹22,220, followed by an additional ₹3,00,000 within seven days. Customers can place their bookings online through Tesla’s official website, using either UPI or a card for payment.

Tesla has also seemed to have strategically partnered with Kotak Mahindra Prime Limited for financing options. According to the official website, customers can avail loans for up to 5 years, with a minimum interest rate of 8.7% and a minimum down payment of ₹6,67,684. It’s always advisable for prospective buyers to cross-check these details with the showroom and the bank for the most accurate information.

As for deliveries, the anticipation won’t be drawn out much longer. Tesla has announced that estimated deliveries will commence from Q4 2025.

The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities for Tesla in India

Tesla’s entry, while significant, isn’t without its challenges. The high import duties undoubtedly position the Model Y as a premium offering, placing it in direct competition with established luxury brands rather than the mass-market EV players. The nascent charging infrastructure, though rapidly expanding, will also be a factor, though Tesla’s eventual rollout of its Supercharger network will be a game-changer.

Crucially, Tesla is entering a market where global EV giants are already making significant strides. BYD, a formidable challenger to Tesla globally, has firmly established its presence in India and is gaining considerable traction. For instance, BYD India reported a robust 137% year-on-year growth in the first half of 2025, with 2,448 units sold, increasing its market share to 3% from 2% a year ago. The BYD Seal, their luxury sport sedan, garnered over 1,000 bookings within just two months of its launch, highlighting a strong appetite for competitively priced, technologically advanced EVs.

Furthermore, traditional luxury carmakers are aggressively pivoting towards electrification, solidifying their EV portfolios with impressive results. Mercedes-Benz India, for example, witnessed a staggering 157% jump in Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales in Q1 FY25-26, with BEVs now accounting for an impressive 8% penetration in its overall sales portfolio. Not to be outdone, BMW India reported that its EV deliveries leapt a phenomenal 234% in H1 2025, with 1,322 electrified units sold, capturing an impressive 18% of all BMW sales during the same period. These numbers from established luxury players underscore the rapidly evolving and intensely competitive nature of India’s premium EV segment.

The opportunities, however, are immense. India’s burgeoning EV market, coupled with a growing environmental consciousness and a strong desire for cutting-edge technology, provides fertile ground for a brand like Tesla. Its iconic status, unparalleled performance, and advanced technology could redefine the luxury EV segment in India. Furthermore, Tesla’s commitment to over-the-air software updates means owners will continuously experience improvements and new features, setting a new benchmark for vehicle ownership in India.

This isn’t just about selling cars; it’s about shaping the future of mobility in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. Tesla’s grand entry signals a new era for EVs in India, one where innovation, performance, and sustainability take centre stage, and the competition is geared to electrify the roads like never before. The coming months will be fascinating as we watch how India embraces the Tesla revolution amidst this burgeoning EV landscape.
